The North West Europe Programme launched the new INTERREG IVB phase of project funding and celebrated its achievements under INTERREG IIIB at a major conference in Lille on 5-6 March 2007.

The event was attended by over 650 politicians, project partners and other stakeholders involved in transnational cooperation from across the region. In a video interview shown at the event European Commissioner for Regional Development Danuta Hübner expressed satisfaction with the performance of the North West Europe Programme: “I believe cooperation within Europe brings huge added value. One of the wealths of cooperation is the wealth of experience we have accumulated so far” added Mrs Hübner. “ We need this cooperation” she urged delegates “It is a very important element of European policy. Please work together. Also it is important … to look back and to see there is something to be proud of. We have achieved a lot, we have a lot to share with others”.

The HST partnership was well represented in a panel discussion on the regional benefits of involvement in the Interreg IIIB programme. A.M.G. Toine Gresel, the Mayor of Heerlen, Councillor Peter Jones, Deputy Chairman of SEEDA and Detlef Golletz, HST Projects Director contributed to this debate. Other keynote speakers include EU Committee of Regions President Michel Delebarre and Jan Olbrycht, MEP and Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Regional Development committee.

The two HST projects were also profiled on a project stand in an exhibition area were projects shared and displayed their work and results. The second day of the event was dedicated to developing potential project ideas for funding in 2007-2013 and gave plenty of opportunities for SEEDA and the HST partners to meet new partners, share ideas on potential projects and prepare proposals for the first call of the IVB programme.
